Version : Darby (Bible)

In Quran from "The Book Of Mary" or "AL-Imran", the letters "Alif-Lam-Mim" or "A L M" literally refers to "Shalom" in Hebrew.

"Alif-Lam-Mim"

"Alif-Lam-Mim" is one of the so-called letters AL-Muqattaʿat — separate letters that appear at the beginning of several surahs in the Qur'ān.

There is no single consensus definition; It is believed to be a mystery or a sign from God and there are many explanations from scholars :

- Recognized as secret knowledge :

Many Islamic traditions teach that the true meaning is known only to Allah.

- Symbolic or liturgical mark :

Others consider it to be introductory literature that provokes thought and reflection before listening to the message of the Surah.

- First Letters of Words or Names :

Some argue that the letters may represent the abbreviated form of words, God's name, or explicit statements that are not explained in the text.

- Numerical and linguistic theory :

Some attribute them to the alphabetic system (numerical value of letters) or to the rhetorical style of classical Arabic as a challenge to man's ability to imitate the Qur'ān.

- Hint of the relationship between the Surahs :

The possibility that these combinations mark thematic relationships between surahs beginning with the same letter (e.g. Alif-Lam-Mim in AL-Baqarah and AL-Imran.)

"Alif-Lam-Mim" can be found at the beginning of several surahs, including Surah Al-Baqarah and Surah AaL-Imran. There is no single conclusive answer so it continues to be studied and explained differently from a theological, linguistic, and mystical perspective.
